batman boards
Posted on July 16, 2012
This storyboarding sequence spanned two modules – we were given a script for “Batman: The Animated Series” to interpret through storyboards. These are more of a progressive step-by-step production board as opposed to the presentation boards we did for the trunk monkey assignment.
It was a good exercise to try to work in the style of a show, except that the school provided a very small amount of reference material – I had to find more online and I think some of what I used may have been from a different series. I think the point gets across anyway – enjoy!

trunk monkey storyboards
Posted on July 2, 2012
Our most recent assignment for storyboarding is to do a new take on the “trunk monkey” advertising campaign (here’s a link to the real commercials that aired around 2006). We had to create just 4 cleaned-up presentation boards to get our concept across – these are meant to be a summary of the concept for a pitch rather than move-by-move production boards. I went with designated-driver trunk monkey:
For the next assignment, I’ll be making a few adjustments and bringing these to color.
storyboarding

Classes just started up again this week! I’m taking Acting for Animators & Storyboarding. The acting class will mostly be videos of myself (& probably Nick) so I won’t be posting much from that class, unless we have some really Oscar-worthy performances. The courses run double-time in the summer so I have two deadlines per week.
I’m looking forward to the storyboarding class – it will be fun to have an opportunity for visual storytelling. Our first assignment was to storyboard a simple actual experience that we’ve had. Since classes just started we haven’t had much instruction yet – they just want to see our baseline skills. SO, without further ado…
layout design – ticino pan
Posted on June 12, 2012
Another simple layout design posting from the spring semester – I based this off of a favorite vintage travel poster of Ticino, Switzerland. The assignment was to design a pan – you can see the basic framing and simple ghosted characters in the second version below (after the jump).
snow white dancing scene – Drawing from the Imagination Final
Posted on June 5, 2012
Here’s my final project submission for my favorite class last semester, Drawing from the Imagination.
The assignment was to illustrate an excerpt of “Snow White” … of course, I forgot to save the text… but to paraphrase, Snow White & the dwarves (none of them higher than Snow’s waist) have just finished cleaning all day. After a good supper, they all celebrate with dancing and fiddle music. Nobody notices the evil old witch, staring in the window from outside.
This was another three-week assignment, with the first week focusing on thumbnails and layout, the second week cleaning up the perspective and figures, and then the third week plotting all shadows and adding value. We had to incorporate all aspects of the semester’s work – correct perspective, shadow plotting, reflections and figure drawing. I learned so much in the class – I only wish there was a follow-up course to delve more deeply into the subject matter!

lip sync final project for Traditional Animation 2!
Posted on May 29, 2012
Sorry for the delay in posting! Here’s my final animation project -my first lip-sync attempt ever. The assignment was to take established characters and animate sound clips. I chose Foghorn Leghorn & Daffy Duck… the beaks were a challenge.
Overall I probably worked on this for about 5 or 6 weeks from start to finish. I still have a few more things to work on before I add it to the demo reel – Foghorn’s comb & wattle, as well as improving Daffy’s settle at the end of his fall. Looking forward to more lipsync projects in future classes!

evil queen from snow white
Posted on May 9, 2012
We recently had an assignment for Drawing from the Imagination that required reflection plotting – so complex! The theme was Snow White’s evil stepmother; the process was challenging and counterintuitive.
In order to make sure that the drawing included the both the queen and her reflection, we were instructed to draw the queen & her reflection first, then fit the frame of the mirror accordingly. This allowed for a view where we could see the queen and she could see her own reflection – much more complicated than you’d think! But next time you are near a mirror and another person, test it out – there are so many angles where you can’t see the reflection, or where you can see the reflection but the other person can’t view him/herself!
Anyway, I am pretty happy with what I was able to accomplish in one week. The style ended up being sort of an art deco/steampunk – her dress sort of reminds me of the layers in a beetle’s body – it evolved as I was drawing it. I had so much fun collecting photo references – you can see many of them on my props pinboard.
There are some more fixes my instructor pointed out – the window seat in the reflection goes down too far; the queen’s left shoe is at a weird angle & should be foreshortened more. The apple sits kind of weirdly against the mirror and anyway I was trying to make it look like a glass apple perfume bottle – I think color would help clarify that. I was hoping to add a burning cigarette in a long, elegant holder, as well as more perfume bottles everywhere, but alas, time is fleeting.
